Process Flow Diagrams
The Process Flow Diagram (PFD) is one of the key documents in any process design. The purpose of the PFD is to provide a simple, shared overview and understanding of the process plant for the entire project team.
Our expertise in Process Flow Diagrams
The Process Flow Diagram (PFD) is developed during the conceptual and/or basic design phases of a project and is continuously maintained throughout the project execution phase. The PFD illustrates the process integration and process plant technologies for raw materials, intermediates, final products, by-products and waste products.
When developing the PFD, it is important to align on the level of detail in the diagram. Generally, the larger and more complex the project, the fewer and simpler the details that can be shown.
It can be beneficial to include additional information beyond process integration and production technologies in the PFD, such as:
It can be beneficial to include additional information on the PFD beyond process integration and the technologies of the production plant, such as:
- Mass balance
- Design criteria (volumens, equipment capacity, linje capacity and critical process parameters)
- P&I Diagram overview
- Indicate new and existing process plant
- Zone overview
- Electrical panel overview
- PLC overview
Once the Process Flow Diagram (PFD) and other key documents have been developed and finalized, the foundation for the continued project work is in place. This helps minimize design errors and time waste for the project team.
A common project execution misconception is to skip over the PFD and jump directly into the detailed design phase. This rarely leads to good results, as important initial considerations and overall understanding are missing.
Once the PFD has been created and finalized, it is possible to begin work on the Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID). You can read more about that here, and how we handle that part of the work
