Process decsription

A process description is prepared by the process engineer after the Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and inventories have been approved as part of the process design. The purpose of the process description is to provide a general overview of the functionality of the process plant. A more detailed description of the plant’s functionality can be found in the functional description, which is typically prepared by the automation engineer.

Our expertise in process description

The process description defines the scope of delivery for the process plant, together with the Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and inventories. The process description is typically included in the requirement specification for the control system supplier, who uses it to prepare the functional description.

The process and functional descriptions form the basis for the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) of the process plant’s control system. This work is carried out in the office using simulation of the plant’s functionality.

The process description is written in a language that is easy to understand for everyone. Cartoons (process steps highlighted with color on the P&ID) or block diagrams can be used to illustrate the process steps. The format is agreed upon within the project team.

We use both the process and functional descriptions during the commissioning of the process plant, ensuring the most efficient and trouble-free startup.
