HAZOP

HAZOP stands for “Hazard and Operability.” The HAZOP analysis is a systematic and structured method used in the industry—especially in the chemical process industry and the oil and gas industry—to identify and analyze potential hazards, operational problems, and unwanted incidents in the design of a facility or process.

HAZOP is primarily used during the design phase of a facility or process but can also be used in existing facilities to evaluate and improve safety and operations. The results of HAZOP are documented in a report that includes a list of identified hazards, risk assessments, and recommendations for improvements. These can be used to inform design decisions and risk management strategies.

The key steps in a HAZOP

  • Definition of HAZOP Team: A team of experts, including engineers, operators, and safety personnel, is assembled to conduct HAZOP.

  • Identification of Control Elements: The system or process to be examined is divided into smaller sections such as pipelines, valves, pumps, and tanks.

  • Selection of Process Variables: For each section, the key operational parameters to be evaluated are identified. This can include pressure, temperature, flow, and chemical composition.

  • Generation of Guide Words: Guide words are words or phrases used to challenge each operational parameter to identify potential deviations. This can include “too low,” “too high,” and “none.”
  • Review of Sections: For each section, the team conducts a brainstorming session for each combination of process variables and guide words to identify potential deviations or hazards that may arise from the situation. For example, combining “flow” (process variable) with “none” (guide word) results in a situation with no flow for the specific section.

  • Risk Assessment: The identified deviations and hazards are evaluated to assess their risk and severity. This may include using risk matrices or other tools to quantify risk levels (including evaluating existing safety measures).

  • Development of Actions: Based on the identified risks and deviations, the team develops proposals for actions or improvements that can be implemented to reduce or eliminate the risk of unwanted incidents.
