Installation of heat exchangers in pipe system to utilize energy source
Competencies
Project phases
Project description
Avista Green (AVG) buys used lubricating oil from the entire costal part of Western Europe and sails it to Kalundborg, from where it is refined at the plant along with the quantities collected in Denmark.
In 2017, the former refinery burned down to the ground, and Process Engineering was consultant in the reconstruction of the new and significantly larger refinery, which today stands on the harbor in Kalundborg. In a part of the process in the new refinery, AVG wanted to utilize the surplus energy to further improve the energy key figures or unit consumption
The project is ongoing, where Process Engineering’s role is to ensure the implementation of the modification.
The process
Existing process:
- Use of thermal energy from hotoil to preheat infeed in column.
- Use of high pressure steam condensate for cooling distillate from column and hence production of low pressure steam.
- There is a surplus of low pressure steam, which must be blown into the air.
Process after modification:
- Thermal energy from distillate cooling on column is used directly to preheat the infeed.
- The modification entails a reduction of necessary energy from hotoil plant, as well as a reduction of the amount of low pressure steam, so that usage and production of low pressure steam are balanced.
This work includes a wide range of responsibilities with design, calculation and purchase. We participate in the project with an engineer, who has the overall responsibility from our side together with internal drawing and specialist resources. We solve the project from our office in Copenhagen, but are onsite in Kalundborg when it is needed.
