Case story

CE marking of charging station for electrically powered ferries

In Oslo, they have invested in green ferries and according to the plan the scheduled ferries should be replaced by the end of 2021. In this connection, SEAM AS is establishing a charging station on the waterfront in Oslo for the new electrically powered ferries. Process Engineering’s role in the project was to facilitate CE marking workshops and train SEAM’s employees in CE marking, documentation and technical file.

The process

Process Engineering became part of the project in the design phase, where it is still possible to change the design to live up to and document the Machinery Directive’s requirements regarding Health and Safety. SEAM AS wanted to be able to handle the CE marking themselves. Therefore, we facilitated workshops, risk assessment meetings and provided various tools such as instruction manual and guidelines so that they are able to document, organize the technical file and review VSSK (essential safety and health requirements) themselves.

It is especially important to identify all possible risks and ensure that you comply with the Machinery Directive. Therefore, our two employees in the project gave instruction in risk assessment by reviewing risks that need to be addressed; Is there a danger to personal safety? Are you sure, that the ferry doesn’t move in the charging station? What happens if the ferry moves?

In this way, we made it clear how the customer can raise safety issues regarding the design, test their solution, and as long as there are risks, the design doesn’t comply with the Machinery Directive or other directives that may also be relevant.

We carried out the project from our office in Copenhagen. We had contact with the customer via Teams, and every week we had a follow-up meeting, where we reviewed the point from the last meeting.
